Well, whales are one of those animals that migrate the furthest distance across the world in their lifetime! They have seen it all from the millions of airplanes that fly pass the oceans, the great pacific garbage patches, ships, oil mining, landfills, the warming and rising waters. We thought to ourselves, what better living creature than to tell the story of anthropogenic climate change through the eyes of whales.
The WHALES PROGRAM is a loyalty program to inspire youths toward waste less living as a means to climate action. Hence, by participating in the waste less challenge on the CHALLENGE page, users are entitled to points (a.k.a. whale spouts) that can be used to redeem for vouchers offered by sustainability oriented businesses. In short, it is a program that rewards users for doing good.
From the MY WHALE SPOUTS page, please 1) select the voucher that you wish to redeem with your whale spouts, 2) click "purchase with whale spouts", 3) click "confirm" and 4) you will be automatically directed to the SPOUTS USE HISTORY page where you will see your discount voucher code. 5) click "use now" and you will be automatically directed to a Google Forms where you can fill in your voucher code and make the purchase. Products will be delivered if required within 14 days from the placement of order.
MY ACCOUNTS shows you the waste reduced based on your participation in the waste less challenges under the CHALLENGE page. When you enter the challenge, you will be prompted to select the daily waste items you have reduced followed by a prompt to upload the photo as evidence. For example, having used my own reusable cup for Boba Tea, I select the waste item "19.7g of Boba Tea cup" and upload the photo of my Boba Tea. This evidence-based approach would lead to 19.7 grams of plastic waste reduced tallied under your MY ACCOUNTS page.
With reference to the statistics from the Cowspiracy: a Sustainability Secret 2014 documentary, one month of being vegan saves 33,000 gallons of water which is equivalent to 125,000 liters of water. Assuming there are three meals to each day of a vegan diet, one month of veganism is equivalent to 90 vegan meals. Hence, one vegan meal can be calculated as 125,000 liters divided by 90 vegan meals to be 1389 liters of water per vegan meal.
Food waste makes up on average 0.75kg of waste disposed of by each household in Singapore daily. Of which, more than half of household food waste can be prevented, with rice, noodles and bread being the most commonly wasted food items. Assuming there are on average 4 people per household and each person takes 3 meals a day, the food waste reduced per clean plate can be calculated as 0.75kg divided by 2 as only half of household food waste can be prevented, divided by 3 meals a day to be 125 grams per clean plate in Singapore.
Conservatively, 1 liter of fuel allows a vehicle to travel up to 12km. Assuming the average distance of products transported to Singapore from Malaysia or other countries equivalent would be the carbon footprint of 200km to and fro, that would mean 16.6 liters of fuel would be required for transport. Given the fact that a 10ft box lorry has a carrying capacity of 1,500kg, the volume of fuel required per kg of product like vegetables can be calculated as 16.6 liters divided by 1,500kg to be 11g of fuel per kg of vegetables.
We have seen some really creative waste less goers! There was once a waste less goer whom cut out used book plastic wraps and used it to wrap a smaller book. For such cases, please select "1g of other waste items (for review)" from our existing list on our CHALLENGE page and then, upload your photo as evidence. We will review the photo and subsequently if suitable, add what you have done to our existing list! Alternatively, please email us at email@example.com to expedite the process, thank you.
The badge of honor is awarded to our waste less volunteers whom have recommended friends to participate in our waste less challenge. As such, they will find the badge of honor accorded to them under "My Prizes" section of the MY ACCOUNTS page. The Whale Story has yet to finalise what value these badge of honors should mean for our volunteers but do trust us that we are working on it and can possibly give an update in early 2021.
